International Silvopasture Congress, Uruguay

Posted by Harry Greene on November 15, 2023 at 9:20am 0 Comments

Hey all,

I recently went down to Argentina and Uruguay, for the Argentine Silvopasture Congress and International Silvopasture Congress in Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Attendees totaled 500 or so, between the two conferences. A few high-level takeaways:

1. The room was full of agronomists, more so than ecologists. The discussion is very matter-of-fact and pragmatic, in that silvopasture is an established, financially-beneficial practice there. The discussion does not…

Keyline Agroforestry Planning Map Development Workflow Using QGIS

Posted by Casey Pfeifer on August 1, 2023 at 11:53am 0 Comments

I put this video together yesterday of my current workflow using QGIS for planning out keyline based agroforestry systems with consistent between-row spacing - a relatively quick way to get a handle on the precise quantity of trees and plants, length of planting lines and all of the other logistical pieces that go with implementing systems like these.

I wanted to throw it up here in a blog post in case it might be helpful to those of you designing systems for yourself or others. If…

The silvopastures of the Bluegrass

Posted by Tom Kimmerer on June 20, 2023 at 3:13pm 0 Comments

I have worked for many years in the woodland pasture ecosystem of the Bluegrass, called by the renowned ecologist E. Lucy Braun "the most anomalous vegetation in North America.

Pasture in forest practitioners tend to have higher uptake of climate-smart forestry practices?

Months ago I had read that woodland graziers tend to have higher acceptance of forest management activities: logging, thinning, mechanical interventions, prescribed burning, chemical treatments, cultural treatments. That sounds intuitive enough, but I remember this was in a scientific paper that involved a survey of woodland owners, with results showing that woodland graziers were more willing to engage in those practices (and perhaps work with a forester) as compared with non-grazing woodland…See More
