Abstract:

The use of silvopasture systems on farms in the Northeastern United States is not well documented. This webinar will showcase the results of research investigating silvopasture practices in New York and New England. The objective of this study was to gather baseline data to describe silvopasture practices and perspectives in the Northeastern United States. To accomplish this, we investigated the structure, management of, and reasons for use of silvopastures in New York and New England through a series of interviews and inventories on 20 farms purposefully chosen as practicing silvopasture.

The webinar will begin with a rational for the study of silvopasture in the region. This will be followed by an overview of the research methods used in this project. The body of the webinar will highlight silvopasture systems documented on regional farms, reasons for their use, and areas in need of further research. The design of this webinar is geared toward a diverse audience of farmers, foresters, extension professionals, and researchers.  Images of regional silvopastures will be relied on to enhance participants’ understanding of the concepts covered. The last 15-20 minutes of the webinar will be reserved for questions from participants.

This research was funded by the Northeastern States Research Cooperative. The host will be Joe Orefice, an Assistant Professor in the School of Natural Resource Management and Ecology at Paul Smith’s College (PSC). Concurrent to his work at PSC, Joe is a PhD candidate of John Carroll’s at the University of New Hampshire with a research focus in Northeastern US silvopastures. A strong believer in applied research, his academic work in silvopasture is partially integrated into North Branch Farm, a diversified livestock and vegetable farm he owns and operates in Saranac, NY (www.adkfigs.com).  This webinar highlights his most recent work to document silvopasture systems on farms across NY and New England.
