SUMMARY:Growing North American Hedgerows webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join CCE Cortland for 2-part series on North American Hedg
erow Growing and Maintenance. In this series, which includes a virtual
talk with Q&A and a hedgerow walk, you will learn about ‘North Amer
ican Hedgerows’; their history, types, and how to grow and maintain
hedgerows with your specific needs in mind – using the techniques di
scussed to ‘make it your own’.\nHedgerows are a strip of dense pla
ntings that act as a ‘living fence’. They are considered to have a
variety of benefits including low maintenance fencing (once establish
ed), supporting local wildlife, creating beneficial microclimates and
reducing watering needs, providing a harvest, and much more.\nOn the e
vening of Tuesday, October 11th from 6:30 – 8:00 pm Jim Jones, a soc
io- ecologist and hedge layer originally from the UK and now a Canadia
n resident working at the University of Waterloo, will start us off in
a virtual talk with plenty of time for Q&A where he will give us an o
verview of ‘what is a hedgerow’ - talking about them historically
and in a location-based context. Jim will then dive into detail about
North American Hedgerows and share with us the types of plants used to
gether with practical experience (i.e. what makes a good North America
n Hedgerow, and how to plant, grow, and maintain).\nThen on Saturday,
 October 22nd from 1:30 – 3:00 we’ll take that discussion and see i
t in the context of the hedgerow work Matt Hollenbeck has been doing f
or the past five years. While we walk Matt will discuss what and why h
e has made the decisions he’s made (species, maintenance, practice)
on his 1,3, and 5-year growths.\nRegister separately to attend each se
ssion (everyone who registers for the walk will receive a recording of
the virtual session). The cost of each session is $5, this goes to su
pport the work of CCE Cortland Ag in developing programming. Please do
not let this cost keep you from attending – contact Dana M. Havas a
t dmh353@cornell.edu or (607)279-7640 to learn how we can waive the fe
e.\nRegister for the virtual workshop and Q&A by Monday, October 10th\
