SUMMARY:Measuring Tree Carbon on Farms: LiDAR Methods
DESCRIPTION:The Finger Lakes Payment for Ecosystem Services Pilot Prog
ram and Cornell Cooperative Extension host Nicholas Cranmer to share
the LiDAR field methods that were trialed to assess above ground wood
y carbon, the protocol that was developed, and opportunities to improv
e future carbon quantification in agroforestry systems in our region,
particularly small-scale farms with diversified production. \r\n Nic
k is a PhD student in Cornell’s Biosphere Modeling and Monitoring (B
ioM2) Lab - which is a nationwide leader in forest carbon research. S
ince 2024, Nick has led efforts at the BioM2 Lab to develop protocols
for quantifying carbon sequestration on small-scale farms with diversi
fied production systems that include agroforestry practices. The work
has focused on a set of three LiDAR scanning approaches, and from Nov
ember 2024-April 2025 Nick and collaborators at CCE Tompkins piloted t
hese measurement approaches on seven farms in the broader Tompkins Cou
nty region.\r\nCheck out the event link here for more info & to share
with your various networks - feel free to register directly here. \n
