SUMMARY:NYS Honeyberry Conference
DESCRIPTION:There is still time to register for the NYS Honeyberry Con
ference set for the last Saturday in June.\n Cornell Cooperative Exte
nsion of Oswego County (CCE Oswego County) and Cornell Cooperative Ext
ension Harvest NY (CCE Harvest NY) will be hosting a state-wide confer
ence on a new emerging fruit called Honeyberry, also known as Haskap (
Lonicera caerulea). The conference will be held on Saturday, June 29th
  from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Mexico, NY.\n Honeyberries are a dark
blue color with a distinct oval shape. The taste is most commonly ass
ociated with raspberry and blueberry, while also containing its own di
stinctive flavor. The fruit can grow in USDA Plant Hardiness zones 1 t
o 8 and can survive up to 30 years or longer if properly managed. Hone
yberries ripen from the middle of June through early July, which allow
s the fruit to sit comfortably between the strawberry and blueberry se
ason. When fully mature, they can produce 6 to 10 lbs. of berries that
can be eaten as a fresh fruit or made into value-added products.\n R
ecently, improved cultivars have allowed for a niche industry to form
and there is a lot of interest in establishing this fruit as a special
ty crop. The conference will cover the history of the fruit, best grow
ing practices, processing, value-added production, and marketing. Gues
t speakers will include growers and researchers from the US and Canada
, including Dr. Bob Bors, a leading honeyberry breeder from the Univer
sity of Saskatchewan. Attendees will also be able to network and atten
d an optional farm tour immediately following the conference.\n The c
ost to attend this all-day event is $40 per person. Registration inclu
des entry into the conference, and an opportunity to try fresh honeybe
rry fruit and value-added products like jam, gelato, and juice. Regist
ration does not include lunch. Attendees will receive a follow up emai
l with the conference agenda and more information on dining and accomm
odations. To learn more about the conference or to register please go
