"I'm not surprised the cattle like the new canes as they shoot up. They're soft, sweet, and high protein. Even humans can digest a reasonable amount of feed value out of the newly emerging canes. Of course, harvesting the canes at that age…"

Any members here ever thought of using bamboo as a winter stockpile? I have a small farm where I raise grassfed beef. I have about 100 acres of forest ranging from scrubby saplings up to big 2nd growth hemlock. Over the coming decade I intend to convert much of said 100 acres into pastures with trees... I'd like to learn more before I start cutting.
