Event Description

Agroforestry is an umbrella term encompassing 5 farm practices: alley cropping, forest farming, riparian buffers, windbreaks, and silvopasture (the combination of trees and grazing livestock).
Shelterbelt Farm has been experimenting with "silvopasture on a shoestring", which will be the focus of this tour. They've been asking, "what's the least amount of money and labor you can invest in planting trees into pasture and still get worthwhile results?" Farmer Erica Frenay will introduce you to their flock of Katahdin hair sheep and show two silvopasture experiments at differing stages of maturity and with different goals.
The tour will be followed by a group discussion of the broader scope of agroforestry, including participants' interests and needs for further training, and cultivating local networks of agroforestry producers.
