Tree Fodder Seminar July 8-12 in Maine invites presenters and attendees

TREE FODDER SEMINAR 2019:  TREES IN THE FOOD CHAIN FOR CLIMATE REMEDIATION will be July 8-12, 2019. 

Presenters, suggestions invited.  Call Shana, [phone]  I am currently working on the schedule.

$150 full week (food and simple lodging included).  $60/2days.  $35-50 Mon. only; $45 Tues. only; $35/day Wed., Thurs., or Fri.; $0-$25 single events.  

Barter usually accepted.  One working scholarship available.   Call [phone] to register.

Monday, July 1:  Prelude to the Tree Fodder Seminar:  Green Foliage Can Change Climate.  (Potluck 5:30 and?) 6:30-8 PM Talk/Discussion at Belfast Free Library.  Sy Schotz has studied with Didi Pershouse and others;  he may and Shana Hanson will offer a review of science on climate, and beneficial land practices, then facilitate discussion. 

Monday, July 8:  MOFGA day:  Tree leaves in the Farm Food Chain.  Overview, showcase of 3 farm consultations for integrating use of the trees present on the farm, pack a silage barrel with willow from Children's Area or from the LIF clearcut elm area, or make a pit or bunker of silage, and/or use Nick Jackson's easy verticle tarped dry stacking method.

Tuesday, July 9:  (This day can be moved to MOFGA grounds, or MOFGA can sponsor the three days without this day, if concerns rise about risks.)  Climbing Trees Safely with arborists, inc. harness with double rope, lanyard, possibly spikes (which by then we may know if sprouting was stimulated on bare trunks in our SARE FNE18-897 Demo Area, increasing future climbability).

Wednesday, July 10:  Ivan Fernandez on Woodland Soils and Forest Health in changing conditions;  A tutorial under the “air meadow” for farmers (inc. pollarders, silvopasturists, agroforesters), and also foresters, loggers, woodlot owners, and anyone interested in current woodland ecology.  (already committed, 9-12 AM).

1-4 PM same day:  Geoff and Lizzy on Mushroom Cultivation of 3 species best suited to silvopasture, agroforestry, and leaf-based livestock farming (committed but not detailed yet).

Thursday, July 11:  Meadowsweet Farm Tour with Elliot Van Pesky and Rayna Palm, who have been shifting paddocks to include woodland due to drought, and also storing dried leaves.  Their mostly Black Angus beef cattle and Icelandic sheep sampled dried and ensiled leaf fodders in early 2019 for 3 Streams Farm's SARE FNE18-897 project.    

Friday, July 12:  Fruit and Nut Day, TBD in collaboration with Maine Tree Crop Alliance (meeting on Sunday, March 31). 

Still to be added:

Evening and lunchtime discussions with or without guest speakers: 

          Research and traditional knowledge of how trees drive rain cycles;

          Mechanized scale collaborations with biomass, logging, arborist, androadside clearing operations for ensiling chipped leafy branches.

Farm Tour for afternoon of Thursday, July 11. 

Moon/Tides/Plants person for another dark clear-cut walk with goats (last year we had a planet/star walk); before we leave, we will review research on tree sprouting and moon phases.

Tree/Livestock Mini-concert or Open “Mic”outdoors in daylight (similar to last year, but different performers).
