HI,

I recently joined the silvopasture forum and I am writing to central/upstate NY people.  I purchased a house with about 10 acres in Fabius NY  a little over a year ago.  One of my goals is to raise some of my own meat and eggs on our land.  We have a small creek that runs through the property and have a small flock of ducks and geese that produce eggs and hopefully will produce offspring for meat. 

I would like to add other livestock.  Most of property is wooded so I have several questions about how to create pasture area in an already wooded lot.     What type of livestock would be good for my lot?  What fencing do I install?  Are there trees that should go?

I am hoping to find someone locally who can help me out by letting me tour their set-up and maybe even seeing my piece of property and giving me recommendations on how to manage the area.

Welcome Terry, I am also a neighbor of sorts, just over (or rather on top of) the hill in DeRuyter. As a farm and forestry consultant, I  can also offer a perspective on what may or may not work in your situation. Karl, that would work for me!  I'd like to see this weather break before we head out, though.  Get a better idea of the land.  On a side note, I also have a BS in Forestry for SUNY ESF (although I've never worked in the field).
