HI,

I recently joined the silvopasture forum and I am writing to central/upstate NY people.  I purchased a house with about 10 acres in Fabius NY  a little over a year ago.  One of my goals is to raise some of my own meat and eggs on our land.  We have a small creek that runs through the property and have a small flock of ducks and geese that produce eggs and hopefully will produce offspring for meat.

I would like to add other livestock.  Most of property is wooded so I have several questions about how to create pasture area in an already wooded lot.     What type of livestock would be good for my lot?  What fencing do I install?  Are there trees that should go?

I am hoping to find someone locally who can help me out by letting me tour their set-up and maybe even seeing my piece of property and giving me recommendations on how to manage the area.

Thanks in advance,

Terry

Hi, Terry!  Welcome to Fabius!  I'm your neighbor (sort of) as well as the Agriculture Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County.  Give me a shout at elh233@cornell.edu.  I'd be more than happy to do a site visit and go over what you've got, what you can raise, what need to goes, etc.  And you're more than welcome to come tour my farm (also in Fabius).

Welcome Terry, I am also a neighbor of sorts, just over (or rather on top of) the hill in DeRuyter. As a farm and forestry consultant, I  can also offer a perspective on what may or may not work in your situation. I never charge for an initial visit (locally), and would be happy to stop by sometime. My work with SUNY ESF is based out of Tully, so I am passing through Fabius often. I can be reached at farmsandforests@yahoo.com. It would be great if Erin and I could meet at the same time.

Karl

Karl, that would work for me!  I'd like to see this weather break before we head out, though.  Get a better idea of the land.  On a side note, I also have a BS in Forestry for SUNY ESF (although I've never worked in the field).
