We are looking for a forester in the New Hampshire area who is familiar with silvopasturing but have not found anyone yet. Our preference is for conventional cutting rather than cut to length or whole tree chipping and really all we want to remove are the pine trees, some birch & beech, and a select number of hemlock.

Thank you in advance

Hi Russell:

I contacted Karen Bennett, the NH Extension Forester.  She provided the list of foresters she thought attended the workshop we offered in NH a year ago.  The names are below.  Here is the web page for their contact information. extension.unh.edu/fwt/dir/index.cfm or here  The forester you work with will know of loggers in the area and the equipment they use.

  • Peter Farrell
  • Brooks McCandlish
  • Troy Simino
  • Robert Graves
  • Jon Martin
  • Dan Reed
  • Peter Renzelman

I hope this helps.

Peter

Russell-

It seems like you have a good idea of what you want cut and how you want it cut.  If you can communicate this to a forester you should be able to get your end result without the forester being familiar with silvopasture.  It would be good [and probably beneficial for the forester to understand the concepts but not necessary. Stress to the forester the how it is to be cut, what is to be cut [diameter and size], the goals [regeneration/light/etc] and see what they have to say.  One thing I always recommend to prospective clients or when I am speaking on forestry is to find a forester you are comfortable with.  If you aren't comfortable find another one.

Good luck.

Jeff
